Helping America's Youth: Engaging At-Risk Students (2006 March edition)
Website: http://ednewsparentscanuse.blogspot.com/
This episode is an audio podcast that was presented by “Cable in the Classroom” in conjunction with Education News Parents Can Use. Doris McMillian is the narrator and primarily discussed the “Helping the Youth Initiative Program” started by former President and Mrs. George Bush. The main focus of the program discussed in the podcast was family, school, and community. There is also a detail conversation with various individuals from state senate to the deputy of the department of security regarding the unpredictable environments of the youth of America. I found this podcast extremely informative for my Action Research. It also provided information that I could share with the parent. I particularly enjoyed the section on connectiveness. It was stated in one of the interviews with a Dr. Resnick, that what youth need from us as adults and educators is, “trust, direction, guidance, clear limits, and lots of conversation to help develop their own sense of values.”

- Mixtape Ministry Mixshow with BliSs
Every genre of music mixed in with a focus on gospel. I listened to this with the kids I work with to show them that they can love rap and hip/hop and not get so caught up with the negative aspects associated with the industry. The love of the music is way more important than loving the lifestyle of the artist they watch on videos. Episode #47 is my favorite. There are actually some top named gospel and secular performers featured on these podcast.

Dr. Marilyn Gardner of the United States Distance Learning Association (of which I am a member) introduces Dr. Darryl Diamond who is the District Administrator for the Broward County School District. This podcast discussed in detail the needs of at-risk students within the virtual school environments. Dr. Diamond answered several questions pertaining to the effectiveness of teaching at-risk students online and the current trends of K-12 learning of at-risk students. Some of the strategies mentioned by virtual schools that deal with at-risk students were:
o Supportive faculty & staff
o Individualized instruction
o Maximizing the use of technology
o Using classical pedagogical approach of mastery learning
o Face to face meeting w/ teachers and students

- Youth Change Your Problem-Kid Problem Solver Video #2
Website: http://www.youthchg.com/video.html
This video captured my attention by asking if you had kids who at some point felt they didn’t have to complete school or get a diploma? The video shows a few sample methods that can be found on the website itself. The site has tons of posters, books, sample worksheets, on-site workshop offerings, and more. There are a lot of innovative solutions on this site.
